Deferral of abolition of stamp duty The Queensland State Government, as part of its Interim Budget for 2012, has again deferred its plan to abolish transfer duty on Queensland, non-real estate, business assets. Business assets include goodwill, trade debtors and plant and equipment. Originally transfer duty on business assets was scheduled to be abolished gradually with a 50% reduction on 1 July 2010 and the remaining 50% on 1 July 2011. This was subsequently delayed until 1 July 2012, then 1 July 2013. The government has not committed to a date with this latest deferral and announced that it is “until the budget can accommodate the abolition”. Deterioration of key revenue sources has been given as a reason for this deferral. For more details please refer to State Budget 2011-12 Mid Year Fiscal and Economic Review released in January 2012.
